It feels later in autumn than the start of October. Already leaves are gathering in piles underneath the trunk of the great beech tree by the Rose Garden in Middleton Park.

The daylight hours are shrinking.

Two swans are grooming at the side of the lake, pulling out pure white feathers. Mallard ducks swim around between layers of algae and discarded plastic soft drink bottles.
